We Three Pugs 2011

Although The Dowager Empress, HM Puggles has passed on to the Rainbow Bridge, I was reminded of her favorite Christmas Carol that we published every year around this time. So, in honor of a great lady and Queen I give you this one more time. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year from HRH Olive, The Princess Royal and staff:

HM Puggles, 1999-2011

We Three Pugs
(to the tune of We Three Kings)

We three Pugs of Orient are
Snuffling low we can not go far
Bellies dragging, tails a'wagging
Hounding the Milk Bone Jar

Oh! Oh!

We love treats and we love hugs
We love all 'cause we are pugs
Licking, sneezing, snoring, wheezing
Guide us to the warmest rugs!

Royal Invitation

Look what HM got in the mail today. She is not sure if she is going, as she can't stand Camilla, would not be able to see anything and the date conflicts with her own 12th birthday celebrations. She is a good friend of the Bride, so she may end up in London for the weekend.

Lucky

A lovely Easter Eve (is that a correct term?) Saturday inspired me to accompany HM, The Queen of All Pugs on an afternoon walkabout in her 2nd favorite park. The small Mill Creek Park is close, has a nice trail and is relatively free of the shady characters and trash that litter most of midtown. We were rounding the bend by the fountain when we found ourselves face to face (muzzle to muzzle actually) with a rather large canine. Being a narrow walkway, there was not much we could do to avoid the encounter.

HM attempted to greet the fellow walker while her daddy asked me "now what kind of dog is that?" The temptation to slap him with my white butler's glove and icily state that HM is NOT a "that" or actually a dog for that matter passed and I replied "Pug". HM continued to check out her new friend, but the new friend was not all that amused.

I detected some Chow; the ruddy red coat, stocky body and black tongue gave that away. Her face, however, was pure German Shepherd; long nose, prominent teeth quite apparent.

"She is a Chow-German Shepherd mix", the nice fellow stated verifying my observations. "And a lucky one too. I found her 12 years ago in December, she was trying to suckle her dead mother under a porch of an abandoned building. Mother had probably been dead a few days and the tiny pup about 3-4 weeks old. Probably were some other pups, but they were likely dead too. I had tried to get to her but could not, so I got some help. As we were almost under the structure, a pack of feral dogs came running up. The alpha male, probably her papa, was a big, ugly Chow mix, all mangy, bloody and dirty. Mean too. Although his bitch was dead, he was still defending his territory. Got a hold of my pants and coat, but not me luckily. My friend got some bricks and boards and fought them off, just enough for me to grab the pup and get out of there."

By now, HM and her new friend were cautiously checking each other out. Her friend's dad was making sure she did not get too close to Puggles and I was doing the same. Sorry, but I do not trust Chows, they are a bit aggressive and temperamental. I did note that the Chow had a nice white leather collar with stones and a matching leash. She was obviously now quite well removed from her humble beginnings.

"Well", continued the fellow, "I took her to a vet and it was touch and go for a while. She like to never gain weight and fought mange for a long time. But, as you can see, she is a healthy girl, been my friend and companion for all that time, haven't you girl??" He gave her a big pat and ear scratch and her fluffy tail wagged happily. "She is lucky for sure, so she is named 'Luckita', lucky to be alive."

We chatted a bit and went our separate ways along the winding path. A few minutes later I noted them by their car. The man opened the door, produced a bowl of water for Luckita to lap happily. Finishing her drink, she sat obediently and got a treat of some sort. After a few more rubs, ear scratches and treats, Luckita, her bushy tail contentedly wagging, hopped in the front seat of the mini-van and off they went.

Some things are just meant to be, no questions asked.

We Three Pugs: 2009

We three Pugs of Orient are,
Shuffling low, we cannot go far.

Red Carpet Pet Party

Check out this video from my friend and fellow dog lover Kellee Katillac. Go to Katillacshack.com and comment on the video there. Each positive comment will earn $1 for the Northland Pet Pantry and help abandoned dogs and cats who are the unseen victims of the economic turmoil.

A further reason to watch is for the cameo of Her Majesty at about 8:05 into the video!

Coupl'a Things XXIII

1) I am pleased to announce that the Queen Mary is out of prison and is now owned by a nice fellow in Independence. She was sprung yesterday and through a fortuitous situation, she is now in a garage waiting to be licensed and a new battery.

It was hard to let her go, but it was best for me, as I did not have the $ to pay off the horrible city of KCMO. How she got out is a story that I will not tell in public. Suffice to say it skirted legality or violation of this idiot city rules and I want no further trouble from them.

Go forth QM, go on to your new home, actually in the state of your birth... and ride in style.

2) Bigger news is that the QM will be replaced by a 1990 Buick Century from my late aunt Pauline. My Uncle Howard (her brother) has it and does not need it. I am going to Galesburg, Il on 10/2 to pick it up. Only 61,000 miles and a new paint job. Should be a good car. I am still going to bike and walk locally as it is good for me. But will be nice to have wheels to go longer distances.

3) Scotch has reappeared in my liquor cabinet. I am enjoying an early but deserved glass of Bowmore, a fine, mid range Islay scotch. Smooth but with the peat smoke and tang-of-the-sea flavor that makes Islay scotch so damn fine.

4) The garden is still producing, but I will not take pictures as it looks like hell. I got some tomatoes, my beans are going fine, the peppers are plentiful and I got another eggplant.

5) HM's Palace News Report: She is most highly NOT AMUSED. She got a bath (second in 5 days due to her skin allergy) and the evil vacuum cleaner paid a visit. If you see a fluffy fawn pug walking along with a bag containing her food bowl and food bag, please return her.

OK Seattle, Give Me My Summer Back

HM decided that 5:30 AM was explore-the-garden-to-see-if-Mr-Bill-had-paid-homage-to-Her-Majesty-with-more-treats time. A few lights flickered on, clothes found, doors opened and off we went. It was cool outside, and raining. The grass a thick green carpet, tree branches drooping with sodden leaves; newly transplanted mint was already taking over the little plot where grass had refused to grow. With rain falling and the grass soaking, HM looked at me and decided that 5:30AM was NOT explore-the-garden-to-see-if-Mr-Bill-had-paid-homage-to-Her-Majesty-with-more-treats time and retreated back to her comfy couch/throne.

I immediately went up stairs and looked out every window I could, wondering if I could glimpse the Space Needle, a glimmer of Puget Sound through the lead skies or possibly snow capped Mt Rainier to the east.

All I saw was the familiar roof tops and skyline of Kansas City.

You see I thought for a moment I had been transported overnight to Seattle. Consider the facts: It is raining...always, it is cool; the temp this AM at 5:30AM was around 60 and everything is green... Pacific Northwest climate, not mid-continent US climate. By August 1st I am used to the world looking UPS truck brown, not green, lush and wet.

The National Weather Service said it is not abnormal to see short term cool weather from the north in the summer. It is unusual, however, to see the cooler air persist for so long. Since records were kept, only 1891 and 1950 had cooler temps. We have yet to see a 100 degree day officially, but we got close.. this spring.

Oh, and as for Seattle...they got our summer, with temps in the 100s and little rain. Maybe like ball teams, we need to do a trade.

Both the pro and anti global warming factions have been doing their usual back and forth using the cool month both to prove and debunk the idea of global warming. Both seem to forget that the climate is unlikely to change over night, and one cool month or one hot winter will not totally prove or disprove the theory. Frankly, as I see it, there is strong evidence of a slow and persistent climate change... and we need to take steps to alleviate it.

But really, I think Grandma had it right all along; the men who landed on the moon screwed with something and everything has been nuts since.

It is plausible... that would also explain Rush Limbaugh's popularity and two G.W. Bush terms too....

Ten Years Ago Today...

A small pug puppy was taken from the small village where she was born to the big city. A somewhat overwhelmed single Pugdad wondered what he had gotten into.

He was counseled to be patient and to keep lots of treats on hand, for this pup seemed to be a bit different than the rest.

Soon it was revealed that this lowly little pup was actually a Majestic, Royal Queen who would benevolently rule Pugdom, PugVillage and everywhere she sees.

It is fitting that on this 10th anniversary of her Ascending to the Throne, that she should be pictured upon it, in deep repose and meditation after a long day of repose and meditation, punctuated by breakfast and lunch:

HM was not amused to be informed it was time to change her 4th of July scrunchy:

Coupl'a Things XVII

1) As in the Great Depression of the 1930's, those out for the evening are flocking to more light hearted, flashy, escapist entertainment. Theatres and performing arts groups are more than happy to oblige; giving the public what it wants reaps box office rewards. Thus I, and if last night's crowd was any indication, many others enjoyed the recent run of the Gilbert and Sullivan classic "The Pirates of Penzance" at the Kansas City Lyric Opera.

"Amusement! Merriment! Glee!", trumpeted the print and radio advertisements.

Bright, cheery, straight forward sets, bright, cheery costumes, and the, breezy, short, never pretentious score and plot of this bright and cheery opera (ok, I made the point) have pleased audiences for years. Even the audience gets to participate, standing and joining the cast in singing "God Save the Queen" at the beginning of the second act. Each night the Queen was played by a "guest Queen". Friday was Katie Horner, local weather lady from KCTV. I know who Sunday's guest Queen will be and it should be a hoot.

2) HM has been totally fêted from around the world on her 10th birthday. Here are a couple of her specially made treats she picked out from her favorite purveyor of Royal Treats, 3 Dog Bakery:

3) It is only 61 degrees today. Hello, this is Spring... bring on the warm!
